This series of drawings reflects my efforts to couple form with concept. On the one hand, this series is very much about the process of drawing. By experimenting with a variety of subject matter and mark-making, I hoped to refine my ability to draw. On the other hand, this series encompasses my interest in Dostoevsky’s The Brothers Karamazov, Russian culture, and philosophical questions raised within the novel. Rather than attempting to convey an elaborate discussion within an image, I focused instead on communicating overarching moods and provoking contemplation. The black lines on white paper are meant to reference black text on pages of a book. Imagery is based on photographs I have taken and direct observations, selected according to my impressions of Dostoevsky’s masterpiece.
